Summary

The June 1967 Beaver Beacon reported that Pope Paul VI had elevated two Beaver Island–born Catholic priests, Victor P. Gallagher and Joseph Walter Grill, to domestic prelate with the title of monsignor. The announcement came through Bishop Allen J. Babcock of the Grand Rapids Diocese and said the two were among ten diocesan priests elevated. It also preserved their Beaver Island birthplaces, seminary education, ordination dates, and subsequent diocesan assignments.

Evidence and limits

This record represents a newspaper announcement of the elevation and a biographical sketch, not the underlying ecclesiastical instrument or a complete clergy file. The issue says each new prelate would select an individual date and place for an investiture; it does not document either investiture, later service, or death.
