Summary

The April 2003 Beacon reported that Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes were below the previous year’s levels and that the Corps of Engineers expected the summer peak to range from two inches below to six inches above the 2001 mark. Dry soils, evaporation, and El Niño conditions were presented as reasons for concern about record-low water.

This is a contemporaneous forecast and explanatory article, not a hydrological measurement series or confirmed record outcome.
