John M. Hallahan (1915–1995) worked as a Great Lakes seaman, port captain, and towing captain before retiring to Beaver Island in 1985. His obituary also credits him with an automatic railroad flange lubricator and pioneering barge fuel shipments through the Chicago canal and river system.
