Summary
Eleven island residents formed Beaver Island Hospice Services on May 22, 1996. After training from Charlevoix County Hospice and Health Department #3, the volunteers had made more than 25 calls by June 10 and offered caregiver respite, emotional support, information, equipment, and help with loss.
The August follow-up says the group had made more than 50 calls and visits, maintained a lending library, and offered a bereavement workshop led by Charlevoix County Hospice director Margaret Lasater at the school during the first week of August.
The September follow-up says the first workshop was held August 10 and that more workshops, caregiver relief, equipment loans, and library support were planned.
The October update says the August conference was satisfying for many attendees, continuing support was forthcoming, and hospice volunteers could connect families with a Charlevoix loan closet and equipment kept on the island.
An April 1997 letter from Ed and Jene Casper publicly thanked the Hospice Group, EMS, Home Health Care staff, Welke’s Island Airways, friends, neighbors, and family for the steady support and practical help provided since December.
The July 1997 summer notice clarifies that the island service emphasized broad family and caregiver support rather than terminal care alone. Volunteers could provide short respite visits and practical assistance, while the Medical Center maintained loan equipment, reading material, and grief-care tapes; the notice also points island travelers to a low-cost Hospitality House in Petoskey.
