Summary
Beaver Island’s 2008 Fourth of July carried the Chamber of Commerce’s theme “Beaver Island’s Hidden Treasures” and coincided with the opening week of the new Community Center, which held a veterans’ tribute just before the parade. The day began with a Missing Man fly-over in memory of Paul Baron, a 36-veteran march leading the parade, and a large crowd at the Carnival afterward; an expanded boat regatta was also planned for that evening.
Program
The June 2008 Beacon reported the Chamber’s chosen theme and, separately, that the newly-built Community Center would mark its Grand Opening week around the holiday: “Friday, July 4th the Community Center joins the entire Island in celebrating Independence Day and our Beaver Island Veterans. Just prior to the parade, the Community Center will honor our Veterans with a brief ceremony of thanks.” A first movie screening in the Center’s new auditorium was hoped for that evening, before the fireworks, “while confirmation of the equipment is pending.” The same issue reported hopes for “an expanded Boat Regatta,” coordinated by Lisa Gillespie, noting past editions had drawn fewer than a dozen boats of all kinds. The July 2008 issue’s post-event account confirms the day opened with “a tribute to Beaver Islanders who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country free,” Community Choir songs, a cannon firing, and an Island Airways Missing Man fly-over “in memory of Paul Baron.” The parade itself began with a march by 36 veterans, followed by the three Fire Department trucks, the ambulance, military vehicles, “Stoney’s bus,” the Evans family’s music-blasting double-decker float, a large Native American contingent, and several groups of young people carrying water balloons; the report notes that “after the parade, much of the record crowd went to the Carnival.”
The Missing Man fly-over
The same July 2008 issue that reported the day’s program also carried the obituary of Paul Baron, explaining why the fly-over was dedicated to him. Paul Foster Baron, 53, of Charlevoix, died suddenly on June 19, 2008 at Northern Michigan Hospital — sixteen days before the parade. Born April 9, 1955 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he had attended the Florida Institute of Technology and Western Michigan University, and was serving as Director of Operations for Island Airways at his death, having previously directed aviation for the Four Winns Boat Group and operations and maintenance at Lake City Airport. He held ratings as an air transport pilot, flight and ground instructor, scuba instructor, and boating master, and the obituary states he “provided flight and ground instruction to hundreds of individuals.” A memorial service was held at Holy Cross Church on June 22, 2008, three days before the obituary’s publication and twelve days before the Fourth of July tribute in his memory.
Evidence limits
The held accounts confirm the veterans’ tribute, the fly-over, and the land parade in detail, and describe a large crowd at the Carnival, but do not state whether the hoped-for expanded boat regatta or the Community Center’s prospective movie premiere actually took place that evening — both are described in the June preview as tentative (“hopes are high”; “while confirmation of the equipment is pending”). No fireworks account or attendance/financial figure is given for 2008 in the held issues checked; no regatta report was found in the August, September, or October 2008 issues searched for this article.
