Summary
The Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce planned its 2003 Fourth of July parade under the theme “America’s Freedom is Forever Precious,” with an attempt to bring Marine Harrier jets to the island to top the previous year’s Air National Guard F-16 flyover. Program
Steve West worked to arrange two Marine Harrier jets for a hovering demonstration over the harbor and a static display at the Township Airport, explicitly framed as an attempt to “top last year’s flyover by a pair of F-16s.” The parade was scheduled for 2:00 p.m., to be led by two active-duty Marine officers and started off by John Works’ Civil War cannon; Island Airways again planned its missing-man flyover; and the Community Choir was to sing patriotic songs downtown starting at 1:30 p.m. Separately, that year’s Township minutes report that the newly built mile-long bike path running from town to the North Shore campground “was officially opened at 11:30 a.m. on July 4th, with dozens of bikers, first, and then walkers setting off from Heritage Park,” while a companion feature notes the path had already been in informal public use “in early June.” Township Engineer Gary Vogt also sponsored a writing contest for essays on the path’s merits.
Evidence limits
No held source reports whether the Marine Harrier jets actually appeared, or otherwise describes the completed parade, carnival, or fireworks for 2003; the Chamber’s plans are documented, but not their execution.
