Summary
Rain forced the Beaver Island Civic Association’s 1958 Fourth of July Picnic indoors, into Holy Cross Hall, where “fun and refreshments” continued despite the weather.
Program
The July 1958 Beaver Beacon’s account is a single sentence: the “4th OF JULY BIG PICNIC” was “rained out or we might say rained in, was held in Holy Cross Hall with fun and refreshments going on regardless of the weather.” No parade, games, prize winners, or proceeds are described. The same issue separately reports the July 5 wedding of Richie O’Donnell and Janet Gallagher at Holy Cross Church and notes new pilots’ radio service (B.I. UNICO) for aircraft traffic to the island, neither connected to the picnic.
Evidence limits
This is the thinnest held Fourth of July account in the 1955-1959 run: it establishes only that the picnic occurred, moved indoors to Holy Cross Hall because of rain, and continued with refreshments. It does not establish attendance, a program beyond “fun and refreshments,” or any proceeds.
Open questions
- What was the planned outdoor program before the rain forced the move indoors?
- Did the picnic include the “Bird Bath” award tradition documented in 1957?
