The December 1983 Beaver Beacon reported a poor Beaver Island deer season, few hunters and deer taken, and community concern that poaching was the main cause of the herd’s reduced size.
Evidence limits
This is a newspaper and Game Club report, not a harvest census, enforcement case file, or court record.
Sources
- Reports fewer hunters and much lower deer-season success, says doe permits produced a few kills, and attributes the small herd principally to suspected poaching; the Game Club, citizens, DNR, and Charlevoix prosecutor's office were pursuing maximum penalties and the hotline was publicized. It reports DNR officers receiving reports of deer illegally shot or abandoned, but is not a case file, harvest census, enforcement log, or court record.
