Fourth annual Beaver Island Dawn Patrol is held amid Parish Hall fire, 1961

Summary

The fourth annual Beaver Island Dawn Patrol fly-in was held 2 July 1961, at the Beaver Island Airport. Rain and low ceilings over the Lower Peninsula limited attendance to 78 pilots, far below the roughly 350 who came to the 1958 patrol. Around 10:00 a.m. a fire broke out inside a kitchen wall of the Parish Hall, where breakfast was being served; islanders and pilots fought it with garden hoses and a bucket brigade until the volunteer fire truck arrived from the airport, and breakfast service moved to the King Strang Hotel and the Beaver Lodge.

History

The Beacon reported the fire was discovered by a member of the Activities Committee, and that pilots, food and tables were moved into the street while garden hoses held the fire until the truck arrived; a bucket brigade then kept the truck supplied with water so it would not have to be moved from the hall. The article thanked “the fliers, the Coast Guard for their equipment, and everyone who helped prevent this fire from becoming a major catastrophe.” No damage estimate was given for the 65-year-old hall, but the Beacon called it extensive and said it was doubtful repairs could be finished before that August’s Homecoming Dinner, which might need another venue.

Six pilots won island weekends: Clarence Gerlach of Manistique (earliest arrival), 20-year-old R. D. Green of Nashville, Michigan (youngest pilot), Robert Powell of Geneseo, Illinois (farthest distance), 56-year-old Kenneth Powers of Monroe, Michigan (oldest pilot), Dr. C. H. Turner of West Branch (lowest golf score), and Rex Beckwith of Grand Rapids (last pilot to arrive before the patrol closed). Breakfast proceeds, ordinarily earmarked for the Chief Antoine Park fund, came to less than $10 because of the low turnout.

Mort Neff, host of the WJR-TV program Michigan Outdoors, was on the island for the Dawn Patrol and filmed both the fly-in and the Parish Hall fire; he returned later to shoot additional footage of the island’s new golf course and Main Street and to interview 90-year-old islander John W. Greene, and the resulting film aired on his program.

Evidence and limits

The July report confirms attendance, the fire, the relocation of breakfast service, and the prize winners, but does not establish that Coast Guard helicopter or boat operations occurred beyond the general thanks for “their equipment.” It describes extensive Parish Hall damage and possible relocation of the August Homecoming dinner, not completed repairs or a final damage assessment. The August item confirms Neff’s filming and broadcast but supplies no recording or air-date log.
