Summary

In February 1996 the Beaver Beacon reported that the Preservation Association had secured financing and expected to take title to the former Dockside Market for the planned Community Center. By July, the Beacon reported that the Association had purchased the Main Street building and property, held a June 15 volunteer cleanup, and begun planning preservation, operations, and a youth space.

In August, the new Community House was preparing its first flea market, a youth-group bake sale to fund a refrigerator, and sales of Mary Scholl’s Main Street print to support the project.

The September follow-up reports that the first flea market raised $700 or more for improvements and that more than half of 200 donated prints of Mary Scholl’s St. James Harbor painting had sold for the Community House.

By October, the Community House was described as an established meeting place after a successful first summer of teen, cultural, fundraising, and community events. Rehabilitation had begun, with foundation, roof, window, siding, and insulation work still needing labor, materials, equipment, money, and time.

In March 1997, PABI reported that professional consultation had found the 1896 building structurally compromised, but that its board still unanimously intended to proceed with a Community House on the site. The updated plan called for financially self-sustaining second-floor apartments, a full-time project director, architectural proposals, fundraising, and continued work through the gasoline-contamination issue.

In April, a Peaine Township minutes report said that the old Dockside Market would be dismantled rather than restored, with salvageable material retained and demolition debris sent directly to Waste Management of Northern Michigan. The report said that Michigan Foundation and other funding prospects looked promising.

By May, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality restrictions were said to limit the property to meeting rooms and open space, ending the earlier plan for upper-level apartments. PABI also reported encouraging foundation responses, engineering and preservation consultations, a teen-designed signboard, a possible piano donation, and Rick Speck’s appointment as treasurer.

The August update says architects and engineers were preparing schematic designs. It also records planned fundraising through engraved memorial bricks, interior gallery tiles, a bulb sale, and a youth-sponsored gift-wrap sale.

The July appeal shows the project still depended on community research and support: organizers sought historic photographs, property records, memories, decade-by-decade stories, completed questionnaires, and evidence of public support for foundation grants, alongside Fourth of July fundraising.

The March 1998 issue also invited families to a March 25 picnic at Peaine Township Hall, where organizers would show and discuss the Community House model and collect contributions for the project.

The May update thanks the volunteers behind the Community House dinners and membership-drive letter, reports 94 memberships, and promotes the new “Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow” brochure as a way to join and support the project.
