Summary

St. James Township authorized its supervisor to discuss placing AT&T and Verizon equipment on island towers. The report linked the proposed coverage improvement to both public safety and everyday convenience. Separately, a 2010 resident reported that an AT&T home MicroCell worked at a Beaver Island house, showing a household workaround existed before the later tower discussions.

Evidence limits

The township source records authorization to negotiate, not an executed lease, installed equipment, or measured improvement in coverage. The MicroCell report is limited to one household and does not establish island-wide service.

  1. Participants again described inconsistent AT&T and Verizon service, with one household reporting AT&T as better and another reporting AT&T outages and Verizon working only rarely. These are household observations, not carrier measurements, but they reinforce the period’s repeated reports of unreliable coverage.

  2. Multiple participants reported an AT&T outage lasting roughly 30–60 minutes and broader difficulty getting reliable service; another participant reported a Verizon network extender working inside a home. These are contemporaneous household reports, not carrier records or a coverage survey, but they reinforce that service remained inconsistent despite later infrastructure discussions.

  3. A community discussion distinguishes the Sloptown Road TDS microwave tower from cell towers reported near the St. James Campground, former Peaine Township Hall, Peaine Fire Hall, and Green’s Lake, and reports unreliable service near North French Bay Road. These are participant observations and location recollections, not carrier records, a tower inventory, or a coverage survey.

  4. A participant described the St. James Township Campground as having cell coverage and the Bill Wagner Memorial Campground on the east side as having poor coverage. This is a local service observation, not a carrier measurement or current campground survey.

  5. A resident asked about Verizon coverage at the southeast end; participants described AT&T and Verizon microcell devices using TDS broadband, and one user reported dependable service from an AT&T microcell. These are household observations and product reports, not evidence that the township authorization produced a carrier deployment or island-wide improvement.

  6. A resident introduced AT&T's 3G MicroCell as a home workaround, and another participant directly reported that a MicroCell worked at their Beaver Island home, with quality dependent on Internet speed. This is a device-specific household report, not evidence of wider cellular coverage or a township-authorized tower deployment.

  7. Residents report sporadic or absent AT&T service, including downtown and the north/south ends; tower lessee Jeff Powers describes a proposed T1 upgrade and possible tower relocation, while another participant reports a Verizon 4G replacement plan for July. These are attributed participant and planning reports, not carrier confirmation or a coverage survey.

  8. Users report Verizon working mainly near the Kings Highway tower, AT&T working for one Stoney Acres household, T-Mobile roaming through AT&T with intermittent island coverage, and network extenders using home broadband. These are household observations and device-specific remedies, not a carrier survey.

  9. Residents report inconsistent or absent cellular service west of town and in Port St. James, while others report successful use of signal boosters at individual homes; these are location-specific user observations, not a carrier coverage survey.

  10. Beaver Beacon, December 2010, "News from the Townships."
Reports that the St. James supervisor was authorized to speak with AT&T and Verizon about mounting equipment on island towers to improve cellular coverage for safety and convenience. No public copy of this file is known; the archive holds one and can provide it on request.
