Summary
John R. “Dick” Martin, a 43-year-old Beaver Island commercial fisherman, was found not guilty of alleged arson after a three-day trial in Charlevoix circuit court. The jury deliberated for one hour and returned the verdict at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Evidence and limits
The report says Martin had been accused of setting a fire on December 23 that destroyed a two-room frame dwelling owned by Clara Denemy and occupied by Lawrence and Mrs. Skippegosh. It reports the acquittal but does not identify the charge statute, prosecutor, judge, docket, exact court dates, or the unnamed Mrs. Skippegosh. The June 2–4 trial dates are reconstructed from the June 6 issue date, its “three-day trial” wording, and the Wednesday verdict.
The proceeding is not evidence that Martin set the fire. The accusation and the not-guilty verdict are recorded separately, with no conviction or causal claim.
Open questions
- Can the Charlevoix circuit-court docket identify the charge, counsel, judge, and complete case dates?
- What was the exact December 23 fire date and location, and was it in Beaver Island?
- Can census, property, or local-directory records establish the four named or partially named people fully?
