A Detroit Publishing Company view of the pierhead light and elevated catwalk at the Charlevoix harbour entrance, with a passenger steamer standing out past the pier, her decks crowded.

Charlevoix is the mainland end of the Beaver Island crossing, so the entrance in this photograph is the one an islander passed through to reach the mainland in this period.

Opened: the steamer's stern is lettered CHEQUAMEGON, confirming the vessel the Commons record names. The Chequamegon was built in 1903 and renamed Pere Marquette in 1911, which brackets the photograph between those years.
